This is an important point. For text and logos the best formats are vector based files with all text converted to outlines in order to eliminate any font issues. AI, EPS, PDF & CDR are some types of vector files that will work well (note: not all files listed will be vector based, “i.e.,” resaving a .jpg as an .ai file does not create vector artwork). For photos or raster images please provide the highest resolution image possible. Typically 150 dpi at full output size or 300 dpi at half output size. For more information on vector vs. raster art please see below.
In very simple terms the difference is how the computer sees them. Vector images (ai, eps, pdf, cdr) are viewed by graphic programs as a mathematical equation. They will print with the same sharpness at postage stamp or billboard size. Vector images typically can have colors modified and corrected as need. Raster images (jpg, tiff, gif, psd) are seen by computers as a collection of colored squares that viewed together will make an image. Raster images will not enlarge without pixelating. This is why web images cannot be printed at large size with nice results.
